Alcatel OneTouch Tribe Omni OT-980 Android Smartphone Preview: Price and Features – In today’s market for mobile phones, there are a couple of manufacturers that are easily recognizable in terms of the products that they release. Currently, Apple, Samsung, HTC, and Motorola are examples of these manufacturers and incidentally, these same manufacturers actually battle it out for market dominance.
In the fringes of the market lie the little known manufacturers. Sad to say, most people might not have heard of these companies yet. For example, ask a couple of people if they have ever heard of Alcatel and you would probably get a dumb look and a blank stare for an answer.
This would be expected since Alcatel is not one of those companies in the forefront of the smartphone revolution. For those who have somewhat are acquainted with the manufacturer, it is fondly remembered for their Alcatel One Touch, that mobile phone so irreverently shaped like a bar of soap. I swear to God this mobile phone can be mistaken really for something that keeps you clean and smelling fresh.
However, with the smartphone boom, Alcatel also jumped on the bandwagon albeit not in direct competition with the behemoths and juggernauts of the market. The company instead relied on tired and tested formula of remaining in the background and targeting the masses, those people who just don’t have the luxury of bringing home a behemoth from the manufacturers mentioned above.
With the release of the Alcatel OT-980, the company is once again trying to pick up the strays and is aiming to get a budget Droid to the people who are inclined to get one. Read on as we take a more discerning look at the Alcatel OT-980.
Design and construction
Measuring 108 x 60.4 x 15.9 mm, the Alcatel OT-980 is rather on the bulky side. That is pretty understandable though because it packs something that isn’t always seen in a smartphones – a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard. This also makes the Alcatel OT-980 a bit heftier compared to other sleek and sexy smartphones with it tipping the scales at 152 grams.
The heftiness of the Alcatel OT-980 is somewhat deceiving because most of the handset is made from plastic. Obviously, it would get the attention it wants nor admiring glances be thrown its way but still, with its rounded edges makes the Alcatel OT-980 very comfortable to hold even with the exposed keyboard.
Under the hood
There’s not much to really discuss when it comes to the components that are lurking under the Alcatel OT-980’s hood. I mean, obviously, this is a budget Droid so the components have already gone through budget cuts as well. However, for the sake of argument, let me lay down the specs for you.
A measly 600MHz CPU powers up the handset’s operation. The CPU might be a bit far off compared to the 1.2GHz dual-cores that most superphones sport nowadays but the fact is, even with a budget CPU, the performance of the Alcatel OT-980 is pretty decent.
No mention of how much RAM it packs but the handset comes with 194 MB of internal storage. Surely, this wouldn’t be enough so take advantage of the dedicated card slot that can handle cards of up to 32GB.
The display and the shooter
The Alcatel OT-980’s display is something of a letdown, really. Instead of being given a capacitive touchscreen, it instead got a 2.8-inch TFT resistive touchscreen with 256K colors and resolution of 240 x 320 pixels? Were you expecting a Retina Display on this baby? The good thing though is that despite the budget cuts, an integrated accelerometer is built-in for auto-rotate of the user interface.
Again, more budget cuts for you. The Alcatel OT-980 only has 1 camera which is a 2-megapixel rear-facing shooter that can snap stills of up to 1600 x 1200 pixels. Oh, did I mention that the shooter also doubles as a camcorder?
Sorry, no front-facing camera can be found on the handset so say goodbye to video chats for the meantime.
The bottom line
Being a budget Android phone, it has to be expected that the components you are getting are basically second-rate. Despite that, the Alcatel OT-980 still managed to surprise with its snappy performance given that it only has a 600 MHz processor.
And if you take a look at it, being able to release a Droid at this price point is already a big achievement in itself so we might need to be a little tolerant of the many shortcomings of the Alcatel OT-980.
