Dell Streak 10 Pro Android Tablet Computer Expectations, Price and Features: The tablet market that broke open when the first generation iPad was released back in the early parts of 2010 is now flooded by a lot of tablets with different make and models. Not unexpectedly, after Apple started the tablet revolution, other manufacturers followed suit and the result was a flooding of tablets of all sorts and sizes with the tablet market getting more and more dynamic and the competition between tablet manufacturers becoming more intense.
Dell, which came to be known for their line up of desktop and laptop computers have recently joined the tablet wars. Making itself known by releasing the Dell Streak 5, the company was said to have experienced the rookie jitters with the 5-inch Streak 5 because the device itself encountered severe identity crisis and can’t decide if it’s an over-grown smartphone or under-sized tablet.
The company though wasn’t ready to throw the towel in yet and showed resilience when they came up with the 7-inch Dell Streak 7. This tablet got better reviews compared to the Streak 5 but sad to say, it was still nowhere near the popularity the iPad juggernaut has acquired. Besides, at the time of the release of the Streak 7, the original Samsung Galaxy Tab was lording it out in the 7-inch division.
Not to be deterred yet again and hoping that the third time’s the charm, Dell is again making its resilience felt by launching the Dell Streak 10 Pro to battle it out in the 10-inch division. What can we expect from the biggest brother in the Streak line of tablets? Will it be the game-changer Dell has been waiting for? Read on for the details of what the Dell Streak 10 Pro will bring to the table once it hits the shelves.
Design and construction
The Streak 10 Pro, which measures 262.3 x 178 x 12.95 mm and tips the scales at 727 grams, deviates from the design tradition of most Android tablets of ugly black slab of plastic. It is a not-so-ugly gray slab of plastic instead with a brushed aluminum panel at its back.
It is hefty at 727 grams and at 12.95 mm, it is a bit on the thick side but that can be forgiven because the Streak 10 Pro packs a USB 2.0 port. Also, it is expected that the Streak 10 Pro will have that excellent build quality found in the laptop line up of Dell.
Under the hood
Indeed, the components under the hood of the Streak 10 Pro are very impressive. It packs a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor sitting on a Tegra 250 3D T25 chipset and has a clock speed of 1.2 GHz. The processor relies on a full gigabyte of DDR2 RAM for additional support while graphical concerns are taken care of by its ULP GeForce GPU.
Storage space on the other hand comes in the form of 16GB of onboard memory. Should this prove insufficient to cater to your storage needs, memory expansion can be done by using the dedicated SD card slot of the Streak 10 Pro. The card slot can actually take cards of up to 32GB for instant additional storage space.
Designed to take on the big boys of the tablet market, the Streak 10 Pro as suggested by its name obviously packs a 10.1-inch display. The panel is actually a WXGA capacitive touchscreen and is HD capable with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and 16M colors.
The display has a layer of Corning’s famed Gorilla Glass covering it for added protection while the usual sensors such as gyro sensor, proximity and accelerometer sensor are all integrated onto the display to extend and enhance the functionality of the device.
Complying with the industry-standard dual-camera configuration, the Streak 10 Pro packs two shooters. Its primary camera is its rear-facing 5-megapixel shooter that features autofocus and a flash and is capable of capturing stills of 2592 x 1944 pixels. Switch the same camera to video mode and it will turn into a camcorder and start recording video clips for you.
The secondary camera of the Streak 10 Pro on the other hand is a 2-megapixel front-facing camera that works in conjunction with the two integrated mics of the device for a more defined video chat experience. The secondary camera is also capable of image capture of up to 1600 x 1200 pixels.
The bottom line
Sad to say, pricing is not available yet for the Dell Streak 10 Pro but what I can say about this tablet is that it is very, very capable. It deviates from the boring looks of most Android tablets available today while at the same time packing very impressive components. What sweetens the deal even more is that Dell claims that the Standard Lithium-Ion power pack of the Streak 10 Pro will give it a battery life of up to 12 hours.
Well, if that happens to be true, then the Streak 10 Pro will truly be a formidable foe for the Apple iPad.
