Alcatel One Touch Blaze 990 Android Smartphone

Alcatel One Touch Blaze 990 Android Smartphone Preview: Price, Features and Other Info – The release of Android operating system for smartphones is something that has revolutionized the way people looks at mobile phones. Gone are the days when Symbian and UIQ ruled the markets and pretty much, Android is the undisputed operating system when it comes to the current market for smartphones.
However, if you mention the word Android today, you would definitely think about high-end and high-spec’ed smartphones, superphones if you like. Devices like the HTC Sensation and the Samsung Galaxy S II embody the Android-running superphone model. In fact, when you say Android, it is automatically associated with high-end smartphones that we tend to forget that there are also Android devices in the mid-range and budget categories.
Sad to say, the midrange and budget categories tend to get marginalized because most people are more interested with the dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, big-ass display-packing superphones and who can blame them? Nowadays, critics say that your smartphone is only as smart as the components that lurk under its hood.
It is a good thing that manufacturers have been coming up with mid-range and budget models so that the masses, our not-as-fortunate-as-the-filthy-rich brethren, can also have a taste of Android. Alcatel is one of these manufacturers. Remembered fondly as the company who brought us the mobile phone back in the late 90s that rather looked like a bar of local soap, Alcatel has recently released the One Touch Blaze 990, a budget Droid that can easily be reached by the masses.
What can we expect from the Alcatel One Touch Blaze 990? What kind of specs does it pack? Read on as we try to get a feel for the One Touch Blaze 990 and decide for ourselves if this mobile phone will become a hit.
Design and construction
The One Touch Blaze 990 measures 116 x 62.2 x 12.2 mm and at its price point looks very luxurious. The handset is also somewhat eerily reminiscent of the HTC Desire though we know that the desire belongs to a whole different breed of smartphones.
A shiny strip can be seen accenting the sides of the One Touch Blaze 990 while its textured back provides a better grip making the handset virtually slip resistant. It also has design accents that makes one think of the One Touch Blaze 990 as more of a midrange handset and not an entry level budget smartphone.
Gripping the phone also gives you the impression that despite its status as a budget handset, the solid build quality is there and there is a nice reassuring heft to it. Not too heavy, not too light. Basically, just right.

Under the hood
Of course, it is unfair to expect something that approximates a superphone in the guts of the One Touch Blaze 990. It only packs a measly 600MHz generic processor and there is no information as to how much RAM is going to work in tandem with the processor.
No dedicated GPU can be found in the innards of the One Touch Blaze 990 as can be expected and storage space comes in the form of 200 MB of internal memory. Measly, I know but the fact that the One Touch Blaze 990 has microSD card slot that can handle cards of up to 32GB for memory expansion is something of a surprise here.
The display
The One Touch Blaze 990 is no high-end smartphone so the screen real estate of the device is not as expansive as you would want it to be. It only packs a 3.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 256K colors and a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. However, the display, like those found in its more expensive brethren, has an accelerometer for automatic screen rotation.
The kicker here is the optical trackpad of the device that makes navigation of the user interface of the One Touch Blaze 990 a whole lot easier. Also, this is the one thing that makes the One Touch Blaze 990 almost looks like the higher-end and definitely higher-spec’ed HTC Desire.
The shooters
Surprisingly, the One Touch Blaze 990 packs an industry-standard dual camera configuration. Its primary shooter is a 5-megapixel rear-facing shooter with LED flash and autofocus capable of snapping stills of up to 2592 x 1944 pixels while the secondary shooter is a front-facing VGA camera for the usual video chats.
Battery life
The One Touch Blaze 990 is powered by a standard 1300 mAh Lithium-Ion power pack that supplies juice to the device that makes it last up to 6 hours of talk time and 550 hours of stand time on a single charge.
The bottom line
The Alcatel One Touch Blaze 990 is something to look forward to for our brothers from the masses and the good looks of the phone combined with the decent specs of the device make it a pretty nice handset for its price range. In fact, prospective buyers of the One Touch Blaze 990 will be treated to a budget phone that looks more like a midrange device and not some cheapskate Android wannabe.
