Epson WorkForce WF-2540 All-in-One Printer

AIO/MFPs (all-in-one/multi-function printers) are not anymore new today, but the question doesn’t only stop on which among which delivers the best image quality, but also which among which has the smallest footprint as a feature? What we have here today with us is the new WorkForce of Epson, the WF-2540, which is sure to respond well to these set of questions.

Titling the series is the name ‘WorkForce,’ so it’s a sort of predicament to say that this line has business people in mind as the target consumers. Luckily the Epson WorkForce WF-2540 does not disappoint, and instead, promises a lot more features than just simply copying, faxing, and printing; the WF-2540 has a faxing capability that has PC-support enabled, has auto-duplexing technology, can print photos and even envelopes borderlessly, and has Wi-Fi plus the new Epson Connect feature. Generally, what users are promised is a totally uncompromised printing machine capable of almost anything, among which includes the modern wireless technologies.

With an opened body size of 15.4×21.3×11.5”, the Epson WorkForce WF-2540 is considerably lightweight and compact for all those capabilities at just 12.8lbs. This may not be too friendly for you, but having a printer this compact allows you to do things by yourself—even carrying it from room to room, without the trouble of the wires. And if we are to talk about wires, the Epson WorkForce WF-2540, aside from its AC cable, has an optional Ethernet port and USB cable—that is, if your situation requires those to be in place.

The build quality, as for me, is the other question so far with this new model. I find the plastic material a bit too brittle for business use, more with the hinges and trays you can find along all sides of the unit. While having a 30-sheet ADF (automatic document feeder) that sits above the scanning lid, opening the lid for the scanbed felt like its about to break because of lack of resistance or mechanical support like a spring or a rubber stopper, so to say. Some of the lacking features also is the ability to connect to various PictBridge-capable cameras for easy photo downloading, Bluetooth, and even a card reader; the Epson WorkForce WF-2540 only has a single USB port.

On the other side of the coin, the WorkForce WF-2540 has all the amazing Epson features. The scanbed itself is capable of up to legal paper sizes (8.5×14”), has the said ADF, and has a maximum resolution of 9600dpi (interpolated). Adding to this is the internal ability to send the output to a connected drive, to e-mail, or to a PDF file. For the faxing capabilities, the WF-2540 can fax mono to colored papers with a speed of 3seconds per page, and can store up to 180 pages in memory. Moreover, faxing is facilitated with the numeric keypad found on the control panel, plus the PC support for that faster access.

The Epson WorkForce WF-2540 uses its own DuraBrite ink cartridges (4 cartridges in all), which can be replaced individually for more money-saving options. Having the said kind of ink also means that with the printer’s fast printing speeds (ISO: 9ppm for mono, 4.7 for colored), grabbing the output in no time will not lead to any smudges, nor can the printouts be affected by liquid and fade-time. Printing quality, as for my perspective, has outputs that looked more like they’ve been printed from a laser printer, and so is the printing speed. Having borderless printing feature is a good also, but for photo printing, you must not expect a real studio-quality printout quality.

Ultimately, the Epson WorkForce WF-2540 is said to have the Epson Connect feature for all wireless printing capabilities, whether it be from an e-mail address, through an Android or iOS app, through AirPrint, Google’s Cloud Printing, and even Wi-Fi. For its price, the Epson WorkForce WF-2540 is one good material to have in an office or at home, but lacking some essentials may affect a fraction of consumers into buying this printer for immediate use.
