Sennheiser MM 450-X Wireless Noise-cancelling Headphones

Up to this day, it’s still hard to conceptualize if there really is an AIO (all-in-one) headphone. Companies like Bose and Sennheiser have always been on the run in providing the most versatile headphones ever. Today, I’ll be introducing Sennheiser’s another attempt to bring a more versatile and a more powerful headphone in a more fashionable and compact way. Ridiculously priced at around $450, the Sennheiser MM 450-X has a lot of features to talk about making it something one would love to call an AIO (all-in-one)… at least for now.

The Sennheiser MM 450-X is said to be designed for travel. However, it would like to quote and unquote something after that tagline: it is designed more for people who are always on and off the plane. I said it because not only does it offer an active noise-cancelling feature, but it is also wireless (battery-charged), it runs on Bluetooth, it has support for cabled playback, it has support for voice calls with complete controls, and it has everything a premium headphone should have in a box: an airplane adapter, a 6.3mm adapter, a cable, a padded pouch, a USB cable with different power adapters, a CD-manual, and the greatest storage feature of being capable of folding up and in.

The design of the Sennheiser MM 450-X may in a way or another be questionable, particularly because most of the parts looked like they are some kind of a better-than-usual plastic material. There are metal accents as well, especially on the band to where the brand is also etched. The cups are properly and amply cushioned, and there are also two paddings on the band itself for better ventilation. Though available only in black (dark grey, actually), the MM 450-X has some other features including two LED lights for indicating Bluetooth connectivity and NoiseGard, the active noise-cancelling feature.

Most hardware peripherals are found on the right earcup, and the list includes the playback controls usable also for managing calls, the button for pairing up via Bluetooth, the button for NoiseGard, and the 3.5mm universal audio port for wired playback. On the left earcup lies the removable battery and the USB charging port. Surprisingly, the mentioned Bluetooth port can also dial the last number called by a long press, and if BT is currently streaming, pressing the button summons the Siri in Apple devices. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time testing it on Android devices. Anyway, the battery is charged more or less three hours, and an active use can last no longer than 20 hours as tested.

Featuring an SBC APT-X codec, the Sennheiser MM 450-X is boasted to have a wireless playback quality much like that from a wired CD player. There are hardly any questions about that, but generally, I would start the audio quality with the word ‘bright.’ The MM 450-X seemed to do very well with the mids to the higher frequencies, making clashes of cymbals, guitar strums, strings and other wind instruments sound more pronounced. There’s a good amount of bass also, and though you can hear it very clear, the highs and the treble still find their own ample spaces compared to the lows. The MM 450-X is not really designed for the bass-lovers, and unluckily, turning the NoiseGard on makes the bass sound more electronic and distorted, and that’s regardless of the playback whether wired or wireless.

The Sennheiser MM 450-X is so handsome that it produces high quality frequencies without obvious artifacts even when played via Bluetooth. Thankfully, the company also compensates the high price very well by making the MM 450-X together with its package well stuffed. Though there’s a slight ‘hiss’ to the lows when the NoiseGard is active, the MM 450-X, for me, all in all, is a performer more than a noise-cancelling earphone you can love.
